Episode 30: Hot Takes We Have About Entrepreneurship
Being busy, having more clients, and knowing more don’t always mean you’re growing.
Being busy doesn’t mean your business is growing.
It’s an easy trap to fall into as an entrepreneur. Your calendar is full, your inbox never seems to hit zero, and there’s always something else you could be working on. From the outside, it looks like momentum. But is all that work actually moving your business forward?
In this episode of The Accounting Edit, we’re sharing a few of our hot takes about entrepreneurship and questioning some of the advice business owners hear over and over again.
First up, we talk about the difference between being busy and actually growing. More clients, more projects, and more hours worked don’t automatically equal a stronger business. What matters is whether your time, money, and energy are producing results. Sometimes growth requires doing more. Other times, it requires recognizing what isn’t working and having the courage to pivot.
Then we get into something every service business owner eventually learns: not every paying client is a good client.
Pricing matters, but personality and culture fit matter too. A client who drains your time, pushes boundaries, or simply isn’t a good fit can cost your business far more than what you see on an invoice. Building a sustainable business means getting comfortable with being selective about who you work with.
And finally, we tackle the belief that you need one more course, certification, or training before you’re ready to start. There will always be more to learn, but at some point, learning can become a very convincing way to avoid taking action.
Entrepreneurship requires you to trust what you already know, make decisions before you have every answer, and learn by actually doing the work.
Some of these takes might be a little controversial. That’s exactly why we wanted to talk about them.
What we cover in this episode:
• Why being busy and growing a business aren’t the same thing
• How to measure whether your efforts are actually producing results
• Why pivoting can be one of the smartest growth strategies
• The hidden cost of working with the wrong clients
• Why personality and culture fit matter in client relationships
